Dazzling light trails of aircraft
Titled Nachtfluge ("Night Flight"), this series of photographs consists of light trails of aircraft taking off and landing in the evening sky. To create it, Brooklyn-based photographer Kevin Cooley had to travel to various US airports, such as New York and Los Angeles. Using a wide-angle camera and a long exposure (4-5 minutes), he waited for passing planes to capture the course of each flight.
In this time-consuming study of light and movement, Cooley created a collection of serene landscapes in which he transforms huge airliners filled with hundreds of people into streaks of soothing meditative light. “Photography, by its very nature, is nothing more than a study of time. Even the blink of an eye can be caught and captured in the picture. Or, as in the case of this series, the opposite is true - many minutes or even hours are added up to create one single image, lined with traces of commercial aircraft, ”says the photographer.
At first glance, you may not appreciate the amount of time and effort actually spent on each photo, but after watching the video at the end of the post, you can better understand the incredible patience of the author!
