Source: Daily MailSoldiers and police of Colombia during a special operation stumbled upon a ship in the river in the department of Choco, near the northwestern border with Panama. It is believed that the submarine, nine meters long and four and a half meters wide, was supposed to be used to transport drugs to Central America.
The police assume that the construction of the submarine took at least five months, and its cost is about one and a half million dollars. The drug submarine is built of sheet metal, equipped with an electric motor that runs on more than a hundred batteries. A camera is also installed on the submarine, which would help the crew to control the vessel.
The authorities believe that the most likely owner of the submarine is the rebel group "Army of National Liberation" (ELN), which is currently negotiating a peace agreement with the Colombian government.
The submarine is being transported to a naval base in the southwestern Colombian department of Valle del Cauca. Colombian prosecutors will check for evidence that will help in the fight against drug traffickers.
Over the past two months, Colombian authorities have found more than 9 tons of cocaine and 1.5 tons of cannabis on the west coast of the country.
