Mayor of Munich Christian Uhde opened a barrel of beer this weekend, exclaiming "O'zapft is!" ("Uncorked!"). It is with this ritual that Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, begins every year, which is taking place in the Bavarian capital this year for the 180th time.
As always, for 16 days, special Oktoberfest beer will flow in the Bavarian capital (only Munich breweries are allowed to the festival), strong girls with several “masses” (liter mugs) in their hands will deftly maneuver in the crowd of drinkers.
The audience will traditionally be swept around on carousels and other attractions. Despite all the charms, this year's Bavarian holiday was not without a fly in the ointment: this year, beer has risen in price by 35% at once, the price tags for "masses" range from €9.40 to €9.85.
Here's how Oktoberfest goes this year.
