An Indian with a rare disease sleeps 300 days a year, but at the same time manages to do business
Hypersomnia is a rare neurological disorder characterized by general lethargy and prolonged sleep, which can last for days and weeks. But even with such a serious illness, people manage to work and even do their own business. A 42-year-old resident of the Indian city of Bhadwa named Purhorama is one of these "tough nuts". He sleeps 300 days a year, but at the same time manages his store, which is considered a fairly successful business by local standards.
Purkhorama was first diagnosed with hypersomnia at the age of 19. The guy was brought to the doctors by his parents, who were alarmed that their son sleeps for 15 hours a day, but does not get enough sleep. Even a young man could pass out right at lunch or during a conversation – his eyes would suddenly roll up, and after a minute he would start snoring.
Unfortunately, the hopes of the parents and Purhorama himself that the disease will recede with age did not come true. Hypersomnia progressed and the time came when men's sleep began to be measured not by hours, but by days. By 2015, he could sleep for 7-8 days without a break, and his record was 25 consecutive days.
Now, when Purhoram is 42, he is awake for no more than two months per year. The man devotes this time without a trace to his business – a small grocery store and household goods. Alas, the unfortunate person cannot predict the next attack of drowsiness, so he often "passes out" completely unexpectedly. At such moments, his relatives transport him home, where they wash, change clothes and feed him until he wakes up.
By the way, there is a Purkhorama can even be in a dream, with your eyes closed and very slowly. Usually he is fed with a spoon, like a child, and this process takes a lot of time. It is surprising that such a lifestyle did not prevent the Hindu from starting a family. Purhorama's wife, Lichmi Devi, replaces her husband in the store when he goes into hibernation.
Modern medicine is powerless against hypersomnia and can only ease the course of the disease. Unfortunately, Purkhorama has too severe a form of the disease and neither hypnosis, manual therapy, nor medications helped him. But the man does not lose hope and waits for scientists to learn how to deal with his condition and he will be able to live a full life.
While someone suffers from drowsiness all year round, there are people who find it difficult to fall asleep even at night. Special methods of fast falling asleep are being developed for them.
