Alien Nostalgia: The Abundance of American Stores in the 60s
All over the world, older people like to compare "as it was" and "as it became." Not the last role in these memories is played by the assortment of shops, cafes and restaurants. If our fellow citizens have nothing special to remember about the distant 60s, then the Americans have something to compare with. Old photos from the life of an ordinary American consumer of the middle of the 20th century give us the opportunity to look a little into the life of a potential, at that time, enemy.
The abundance in the windows, bright advertising posters, racks filled with products of well-known brands - if it were not for people in old-fashioned clothes, one would think that the pictures show modern supermarkets and shops somewhere in Saratov or Omsk.
Although it's not just about clothes - in the photo, buyers and sellers, even accidentally caught in the frame, seem happy and, with rare exceptions, sincerely smile. If we managed to achieve a similar assortment on the shelves, then nothing can be done about facial expressions.
So similar to our cosmetic shop, on the windows of which bottles, bottles and tubes, treasured for every woman, lined up.
Remember how our tourists loved to photograph sausage counters in capitalist countries? Here it is - decaying capitalism in its most annoying product manifestation.
But it looks like a modern shopping center, somewhere in a provincial corner of our country. Is not it so?
Small business representatives with products unknown to science, but important for insatiable American consumers.
Surprisingly, the almost 60-year-old photo looks like it was just taken somewhere in a country store. True, the scales let us down - the model would be 20 years younger ...
The seller of disks, that is, records. This type relatively recently could be found in every spontaneous market.
The checkout in the supermarket looks quite up-to-date, but, as usual, the technology gives away the age of the picture.
Small things at the checkout area - razors, batteries, cigarettes. Nothing new.
Again, the cashier and obsessive American service - a smile to the load.
We have already seen this somewhere. Maybe today while shopping?
Various necessary little things from among the products for personal hygiene.
Shopping with baby. Is it familiar?
And this is just some kind of "scoop". Even a little ashamed of them.
Checkout line.
Household appliances for all occasions - from watches to air conditioners.
In the US, cashiers smile just like that - a tradition.
Bookstore or library.
And this is ... no, not the USA. This is an ordinary store in the 60s. Although you can guess by the expressions on their faces.
