A woman told about her husband's depression in a series of poignant photos

"The Sea that Surrounds Us" is a project by photographer Maureen Drennan, in which she documents her husband's struggle with depression and her own struggle on the way to understanding this condition.

The name of the photo project is taken from a poem by Pablo Neruda called "Night on the Island". The series of photographs intersperse pictures of Maureen's husband and photos of Block Island and Rhode Island - the places where she spent her childhood. The desolation and isolation of the island is both a physical embodiment of the distance she felt in her relationship with her husband, and a tangible metaphor for the inner world of her spouse during depression.

Now this difficult time is over for Maureen and her husband, but the pictures remain a reminder of human vulnerability and how difficult it is to truly understand the experiences of another person, no matter how close you are.
