Microhomes became popular in Japan in the 1990s, when housing prices skyrocketed and many young Tokyo residents began to quietly move to the suburbs.
Since that time, the popularity of tiny, but quite comfortable dwellings has grown exponentially. This is not at all the same as residential complexes with cramped apartments - each micro-house is designed for one family. They, as a rule, are built according to the projects of young architects on the "patch" of land left unoccupied after the implementation of larger architectural projects. Often these "patches" are no more than a parking space for one car.
