Kolmanskop
Kolmanskop story begins, like many African tragedy, with diamonds. In 1908 the German settlers tried to push through the Namib desert railway to connect the coast with the Namibian town of Keetmanshoop.
One of the workers, Zachary Lewala, found in the sand a diamond in the rough and brought it to his boss. The news about the discovery spread through the German colony like wildfire, and soon hundreds of seekers of stones flooded the desert.
The diamonds on the surface are very rare, but legend has it that in Kolmanskop you could walk at night in the desert and pick up from the sand, glittering in the moonlight stones. Right on windswept sand dunes, the city was named Kolmanskop, which at the height of the diamond boom there were more than 1200 residents.
But times change, and due to a drop in diamond prices after the First world war and discovery of richer diamond fields further South Kolmanskop lost their popularity. The miners with their families left home and left the desert.
Station radio intelligence Teufelsberg
PU dome on top of the artificial hill since the artificial fears... This abandoned radar post during the cold war near Berlin in Germany rises from the forest like a beacon, illuminating with its light the pages of a complicated story.
Built in 1963, the station signals intelligence was used by the national security Agency of the United States during the cold war, supposedly to intercept military and diplomatic communications. Surviving records are too nebulous and vague to determine the exact nature of the work performed there. After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1991, the station was abandoned.
Perhaps more interesting than the station itself, the history of the hill Teufelsberg ("devil's mountain" in translation into Russian), on which it stands. This hill is the highest point in Berlin, actually a huge pile of the remnants of destroyed during the Second world war urban buildings piled on Nazi military school, which is still intact somewhere under tons of rubble.
Since 1991 the listening station was disabled, she often changed owners. Each new customer started with ambitious plans of becoming dome-shaped radomes in a hotel, a Museum or something like that, but so far all the plans have failed, leaving only two strange buildings as tombstones to the past of Berlin.
Boston Long Island
Not to be confused with the similarly named island in new York. Boston long island does not want to be inhabited. This nearly three-kilometer plot of land in Boston Harbor from the time of colonization in the 17th century was the site of numerous failed projects.
The turbulent history of this region began in 1675, when the English settlers sent hundreds of Indians to the Islands in the harbour and left them to their fate among the barren cliffs of the harsh winter of 1675-1676 years. Most of them died of starvation.
During the Second world war as part of operation Paperclip on long island was secretly brought German scientists. The island is considered a source of inspiration Dennis Lehane for writing the novel "Island of the damned."
Citing security concerns, the mayor of Boston Martin J. Walsh closed the bridge leading to long island, and moved all the inhabitants to the mainland, once again turning the island into a Ghost town.
Abandoned railway line in Paris
In 1841 Paris was overwhelmed by the idea of railway transport. It was recently finished the project of large fortifications around the city, and the military was looking for ways to deliver troops and supplies from the city center to the fortress.

Passengers from the suburbs was supposed to go to the center of Paris, only to catch another train that takes them to another point on the edge — sometimes within a few minutes walk from their original point of departure.
Over the years, the Small waist has remained almost untouched. It is overgrown with moss and ivy, and not even many Parisians know about its existence. Almost 32 kilometres of Railways, several tunnels and bridges hidden in the midst of urban development.
Dutch island
Nearly 400 people once called the Dutch and their island home. The islanders, mostly fishermen and their families, for many centuries received food directly from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. But in the end the sea stopped and began to pick up.
The coastline has eroded the waves, and the eight island was gradually decreased. Like many other Islands in Chesapeake Bay, Dutch island consists mainly of silt and clay, and not from the rocks, and this makes it easy prey of the winds and waves.
The last inhabitants fled from the island in 1922, leaving their homes and temples as grim monuments to the people who lived here once. But they slowly sank in the sea. All except one.

Systems such as these Russian giants, albeit on a much smaller scale, today commonly used to simulate lightning on the industrial equipment.
Near Fort Bragg, California, is a secluded beach, swim in the bright colors of emeralds, rubies, turquoise and diamonds. But it's not the gems lying on the sand.

Now, however, Glass beach is part of the National Park Mackerricher, and therefore, picking up any stones illegally.

The Maunsell FORTS
As metal animals, rising from the dark depths, the Maunsell FORTS stand guard at the mouth of the Thames to this day. Although they are not as useful as before, but the FORTS serve as a silent reminder of our turbulent past.
When the threat of German air raids on Britain during the Second world war became a reality, the Ministry of defence has commissioned several naval FORTS to defend the country's airspace.
In addition to the four naval FORTS was built six FORTS for defense. Three of them were installed on the river Mersey and three in the Thames estuary. Of the three FORTS on the Thames, only two have survived: "Red Sands" and "Quicksand."
The ship SS Ayrfield
If you sail past the mangroves at Homebush Bay in Sydney, Australia, and looking Northwest, you can see something incredible: the rusted body of a 100 year old steamer with growing on its decks to the forest.
During the Second world war, the Commonwealth requisitioned Ayrfield as a cargo vessel to deliver supplies to allied forces in the Pacific. After the war the ship returned to his work in the shipping office of Miller, and in 1972, was decommissioned and sent to die in Homebush Bay.
He has since cleared, and now only a few rusty ships visible above the waterline. SS Ayrfield but remains a relic, reminiscent of the Bay and that not everything that dies should stay dead.
