In 1895 he took a picture of Princess angelina, the eldest daughter of Seattle, the leader of the tribe Suquamish, in whose honor the city was named. This meeting has had on Curtis such an impact that he was fascinated by the culture of Indian tribes.
Soon Edward joined the expedition to see how the native Americans live in Alaska and Montana.
In 1906, Curtis met with a wealthy financier John. P. Morgan, who began to sponsor a documentary project about indigenous peoples of the continent. They decided to create a 20-volume series called "North American Indians".
Thanks to the support of Morgan, Curtis for 20 years, traveled all over North America, making about 40 thousand photographs of Indians from over 80 different tribes. He recorded on thousands of wax cylinders of their songs and languages, as well as documented oral histories, legends and biographies.
In their efforts to commit a vanishing way of life Curtis sometimes sinned with documentary authenticity of the images. The characters of his images appear in romanticized forms an imaginary pre-Columbian era and completely devoid of signs of Western civilization.
The work of Curtis, perpetuating the mythical image of the "noble savages" are one of the most impressive historical record of Indian life in the early twentieth century.
