In St. Petersburg the scientists of the faculty of biotechnology of the ITMO University are working to test hypotheses about the creation of the "medical beer" on the basis of a tropical strain of yeast.
Work is in progress for the past four months. If all goes as planned, the beer will cleanse the body from pathogens and help to improve digestion and correct disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
The drink will include tropical yeast that are open in the first half of the twentieth century by French microbiologist Henri Boulard while on a trip to Indochina. Locals told him that the yeast is helping the sick with cholera. Scientist concluded that they work as a probiotic.
For a long time, yeast was considered a remedy for diarrhoea. The authors of a new study have suggested that once they can produce alcohol and carbonic acid, that on their basis it is possible to prepare intoxicating drink. However, the degree it will have a less than conventional beer and "bouquet" will have a tropical feel.
Scientists are not sure that the yeast will preserve the useful properties in the cooking process. But if the experiment succeeds, people will receive useful and, equally important, inexpensive drink.
However, psychiatrist-narcologist Alexander Kovtun suggested that such a new interest only to discerning palates. People who are dependent on alcohol, are unlikely to pay attention to it, and young people prefer to taste a classic beer or wine.
