Viewers of the fantasy cartoon "Disappointment" from the author of "The Simpsons" learned what Trump looks like against the background of "Game of Thrones".
Netflix presented to the audience the first 10 episodes of the fantasy animated series "Disappointment" by Matt Groening, the creator of the world-famous "Futurama" and "Simsons". Sparkling subtle humor is present in every frame. The main characters of the new tape are a restless princess, a cynical little devil and a whining elf. The events unfold against the background of the scenery of the cult films "The Lord of the Rings", "Game of Thrones" reworked in a comedic style. Jokes, comic episodes refer the viewer to real events, famous personalities.
Passion and prose of life in "Disappointment"
In the plot, as in a rollicking blockbuster, there is everything: a rich heiress, a dead fiance, chases and even alcohol addiction. And most importantly – a scandal. The kingdom of Dreamland is preparing for the magnificent wedding of Princess Bean. She, having other plans, runs away from the church, accidentally killing the groom. The victim's brother is called to replace him. He pursues the bride, taking a squad of knights.
The fugitive has two accomplices – an angel and a demon. The role of the angel went to the ever-aching elf Elfo. The harmful little devil Lucik was with the princess by the will of powerful sorcerers. His mission is the main mystery of the series. The princess breaks the established rules in the fantasy kingdom, wanting to experience adventures available only to men. The team of fugitives is accompanied, and often carried on the back of an ironic horse.
Matt Groening masterfully weaves real-world events into the plot. The restless Bean is angrily condemned by a racist antelope living in a dense forest. The roads are full of robbers demanding gender loyalty. The groom's brother gives out a misogynistic speech in anger, trying on a wig in the style of Donald Trump's hairstyle.
Matt Groening talks about "Disappointment"
The famous author, who was stingy with interviews, made an exception and told about the new series. The tape was created in the conditions of adaptation to Netflix. Having changed television to the Internet, the author had to master new boundaries in humor. Jokes about racism, Donald Trump, the gender issue do not contain anything radical. Therefore, "Disappointment" received an age rating of "12+" in Britain.
Matt Groening with his famous characters
Together with co-author Josh Weinstein, he created an animated drama about a teenager. The red line in the plot is the theme of finding yourself, which is exactly what the three fugitives are doing. Despite the severity of the problem, something comedic happens in every scene.
How the "Disappointment" arose
The Simpsons has already demonstrated responsiveness by reacting to real-world events in the new series. Launching an animated action requires many years of preparation. Matt Groening started working on a fantasy cartoon in 2012. He kept separate notebooks for the plot, sketches, descriptions of landscapes and inhabitants of the fabulous Dreamland. Therefore, the variety of fantasy inhabitants of the kingdom is not limited to the familiar orcs and elves. The artist did not expect that the world would explode with laughter from his story in 2018.
The star team of "Disappointment"
Matt Groening prefers to work with a proven team. He entrusted the animation of the cartoon to Rough Draft Studios. Earlier, his "Futurama" was created in the walls of this company.
Abby Lee Jacobson, Eric Andre and Nat Faxon.
Cartoon Longevity Forecasts
Critics do not undertake to predict the new brainchild of 64-year-old Matt Groening the same long-term success as The Simpsons. In the realities of a rapidly changing modernity, 30 years is a long time. The rapidly developing horizontal plot sets the viewer up for a close denouement. Subtle, intelligent humor attracts attention. The new series is not suitable as a backdrop for a noisy party.
At the moment, the series has received mixed reviews from critics, who gave the first episode a rating of 60%, they believe that the tape has enough recognizable humor of the author of The Simpsons to win the approval of fans. Unwillingness to take risks and familiarity are noted as weaknesses. Forbes awarded the series with excellent epithets. This means that the viewer will have to make up his own opinion about the "Disappointment".
