A Hollywood story unfolded on the Polish-Belarusian border: a domestic cow escaped from a farm and joined a herd of wild bison, which, most likely, saved the fugitive from wolves. Now the chick spends the winter in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in the company of harsh shaggy guys, but experts are seriously concerned about their future fate.

A young cow, which was supposed to go to slaughter, escaped last fall from the village of Skupovo in the Podlaskie Voivodeship of Poland to the bison in the Bialowieza Park. The animal of the meat limousine breed, popular in Europe, got out through a hole in the fence and, after wandering a little around the neighborhood, came out on the Polish side of Belovezhskaya Pushcha.

When experts noticed a runaway among a herd of bison in November, the young animal looked healthy and felt quite comfortable next to five dozen larger ruminants. Then it was assumed that the cow would wander through the forest and return home when winter came. Last week, biologist Rafal Kowalczyk again discovered an unusual companion of bison. Despite wintering in the wild, the cow looked active and, apparently, joined the herd.

However, experts believe that such a phenomenon is abnormal, and doubt that the cow will be able to become a full member of the herd. In addition, such an unusual friendship can lead to mating, which would mix about 600 Belovezhskaya bison with hybrids. At the same time, it is not a fact that a cow will survive during childbirth: a hybrid calf is larger in size than a normal one, so the chances of a female giving birth on her own in this case are small.

Now the traveling cow is too young to breed, and it looks like she will be returned home before the beginning of spring.
