Tat Kuang Si Waterfall, Luang Prabang, Laos

Tat Quang Si is a waterfall located approximately 32 km south of Luang Prabang on the left bank of the Mekong, on the territory of the national Park of the same name. The waterfall consists of a main cascade with a height of 54 m and a series of cascades of lower height. Ten meters below the second cascade is a small cave. Between the cascades there are several pools with water of a rich turquoise hue.

The unusual color is due to the fact that water flows through limestone rocks and soil layers containing limestone, and actively converts the calcium carbonate contained in them into soluble calcium bicarbonate due to the high content of carbon dioxide in soil waters. Calcium bicarbonate is unstable and falls as a crystalline precipitate to the bottom, forming a so-called stratum. Dissolved carbonates give the water in the pools of the waterfall a deep turquoise color. A number of other waterfalls in Southeast Asia have similar water properties. One of the most famous is Erawan in Thailand.

The water consumption at Tat Quang Si strongly depends on the time of year, since a significant part of the water feeding the waterfall is rainwater. It is most full-flowing from August to November. Tat Quang Si is located on the slope of a mountain covered with dense vegetation, consisting mainly of mixed deciduous forest. The waterfall is popular with locals who come here on weekends for swimming and family picnics. Entrance to the territory is paid and is 20,000 kip, which allows you to maintain cleanliness around the waterfall and monitor the condition of the surrounding forest. There is a trail along the waterfall. Below the main tier there is a bridge and a ladder by which you can climb to the top of the cliff.
