Rats trained to find explosives could save thousands of people around the world from death and injury. So at least believes APOPO, a Belgian organization that trains African hamster rats to detect mines. The rats they trained have been in use since 1997 and are able to search 200 square meters in 20 minutes, compared to 25 hours for people with mine detectors.
Not a single heroic rat has yet died in the execution. For the average mine to detonate, you need to apply a weight of about five kilograms, and the heaviest of these animals weigh no more than one and a half kilograms. When a rat, for one reason or another, can no longer work, it retires.
