In Estonia there is a place where men are very rare. The island of Kihnu, located in the Baltic sea about 11 kilometers from the Western coast of the country, are run by women. This island with a population of 400 people — one of the last bastions of matriarchy in the world.
It is not that the women of Kihnu have something against men. They simply have no choice but to take the reins of government into his own hands. The male population of the island leaves his father's house for many months to engage in fishing. For centuries women remained on the island for the main.
The women of the island all the forces trying to preserve the traditions and heritage of Kihnu.
It is difficult to preserve a legacy when the young people leave to get an education and find work, and often not returned. In the summer the island is popular among tourists, but to attract young people, so she never left the island, nothing.
Fortunately, officials are not sitting idly by, and the culture of Kihnu, namely wedding traditions were added to the list of intangible heritage of UNESCO. But for all its uniqueness from Kihnu there are problems, and life there is not for the faint of heart. According to Matas, there is a very different way of life than on the mainland, is much more complicated. However the locals had no other way, and they believe that they live in the best place on earth.
