45-year-old Fatima Munye and 53-year-old Niyaz Bano from Pakistan were doused with acid, after which terrible scars were left on their faces. 24-year-old Zahida Parvin burned her face when a gas cylinder exploded in the kitchen. Dr. Asim Shahmalak, who lives in Manchester, periodically comes to Karachi (Pakistan) to perform operations for free. In his own words, he plays a small role in the phenomenal efforts of surgeons to help women cope with life-changing injuries. He's doing a hair transplant from his head to his eyebrows. Asim is one of nine surgeons in the world who perform such operations. He said he cried when he first heard the stories of acid attack victims he treated in a Karachi hospital.
Fatima Munye, 45, was doused with acid during a family quarrel over money.
53-year-old Niyaz Bano was doused by a relative with acid disguised as a cup of tea during a scandal at her daughter's wedding. The acid affected the face, hands and upper body.
24-year-old cleaner Zahida Parvin was injured in the kitchen while cooking. It took four surgeries to restore the woman's face.
Asim Shahmalak collaborates with the Pakistani charity Depilex Smileagain, which helps women affected by acid attacks. The Foundation not only finds surgeons to perform operations, but also helps to provide jobs for women.
