The Pirelli calendar is known all over the world. It all started in 1964, when an Italian tire company first noticed that two things were needed to successfully promote a brand: girls and cars.
2. Gisele Bündchen, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, 2006
Only the best photographers were involved in creating pictures: in different years, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (Mert & Marcus), Helmut Newton, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinood Matadin (Inez & Vinoodh).

The first issue of the calendar reflected the free spirit of the swinging London of the 60s and was a resounding success. In 1972, to smooth over the impression of excessive frankness, the Pirelli team for the first time invited a woman photographer to cooperate. Sarah Moon chose the empty Villa Les Tilleuls in Paris to shoot.

One of the most revealing was the 2012 calendar by Mario Sorrenti. A feature of the 2013 calendar, on the contrary, was the absence of naked bodies.
The anniversary edition includes Helmut Newton's "lost" calendar, filmed in 1986 in Monte Carlo, Monaco and Chianti in classic black and white. The order went to Bert Stern, and Newton only worked with Pirelli in 2013.

The Pirelli calendar is a collectible. It is distributed in a limited edition, part of which is sold at auction. Pictures from the Pirelli calendar adorn the walls of museums and galleries.

Taschen's Pirelli: The Calendar 50 Years and More will be available on August 10, 2015.
