4 tons of Nazi gold found on a sunken ship off the coast of Iceland

Categories: History | Water

A group of British treasure hunters discovered a huge box of gold bars weighing 4 tons and worth 100 million pounds sterling (almost 112 million euros) 193 km from the coast of Iceland. Advanced Marine Services found a treasure trove of gold in the mail room on the SS Minden cargo ship that sank in 1939.

Presumably, the ship sailed on September 6 from Brazil with gold from South American banks, which was loaded onto the ship by employees of Banco Germanico, a subsidiary of the German Dresden Bank.

On the way to Germany, the SS Minden was spotted by the British cruisers HMS Calypso and HMS Dunedin, and Adolf Hitler ordered the ship's captain to hide or sink the ship so that the cargo would not fall into the hands of the British Royal Navy.
