And although she lived only 47 years, Frida left behind a legacy that still fascinates and inspires. These rare photographs, taken by renowned French photographer Giselle Freund in the early 1950s, document the last days of Frida Kahlo and serve as a worthy tribute to her memory.
Freund lived with Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera in Mexico City after fleeing the political regime and tensions in Argentina. It was 1950 and Frida Kahlo's health deteriorated sharply, mainly due to a series of unsuccessful spinal cord surgeries that she underwent. She was also mentally and emotionally unhealthy, and her art became dark and dismal. But her clothes, however, remained colorful and eccentric. While it was a dark time for Kahlo, Gisele Freund's photographs conveyed the dedication to her work, which she held until her very last breath.
Frida Kahlo died at home in July 1954, just years after Giselle Freund returned to Paris. Photos of Frida Kahlo were published in 2015.
