There is a 30-kilometer exclusion zone around the site of the disaster, which is still heavily contaminated with radiation released after the accident.
Despite the fact that wildlife is not suitable for human habitation, it has again returned to the exclusion zone. More than 60 species of mammals are said to live there, including wild boar and elk. The wolves are doing particularly well, with a population seven times larger than the population of wolves in neighboring reserves.
Far from becoming the barren wasteland that many predicted after the cataclysmic event, the area, in the absence of humans, has become host to a great biodiversity. It really shows the power of nature, which will recover if left without us.
Proof of this can be seen in this exciting list. Marvel at how the gray concrete blocks gradually give way to greenery as plants and trees slowly engulf the ruins of the former Soviet city. You can also meet some local wildlife celebrities who look remarkably healthy considering the heavily polluted land around them.
