Small Italian villages are struggling to keep residents going to live in big cities. The municipality of the Sicilian city of Mussomeli decided to sell abandoned houses for less than half the price of coffee made by a barista.

100 abandoned properties have been put up for sale online, and 400 more properties are expected to be added soon.

The website of the Mussomeli Municipality project in Sicily reads:

Buyers must renovate their new homes within a year of purchase, otherwise they will lose their $8,000 security deposit.

The expected cost of the renovation work will be about $107 per square foot, plus administrative fees ranging from $4,000 to $6,450.

There are engineers and architects in the city who can help with repairs, but new residents can also use the services of third-party repair organizations.
