The most expensive of his work was sold for 31,250 pounds sterling and this figure is not due to the value of the paintings, a tragic story of love and death associated with the picture.
In these two paintings the victim and her killer. Portrait of a young Dolly Henry, Irish clothing from a Department store, Kerry wrote shortly before he killed her and himself. The tragic story of the unrecognized genius snatched from obscurity and made a new way to assess his work.
John Kerry was an illegitimate child, whose mother gave birth out of wedlock. The artist's childhood was difficult — to get away from the pursuing family poverty, young Kerry took any job that could bring at least some income.
The same painting, written a few months before the tragedy
Despite this, all, what did John, one way or another been associated with art. He painted ceramics pottery workshops, drawing sketches and drafts, designed the billboards. When it's time to think about the future and get serious profession, talented guy was able to enroll in the Royal College of art in London.
No doubt, Kerry had a great gift that could make him famous and rich. His paintings were similar to the paintings of the Renaissance, but it had a sharp personality, for which the artist's work cannot be confused with paintings of other masters of the early XX century.
Novel John and Dolly was swift and hot. Soon after meeting 27-year-old artist abandons the family and is totally dedicated to his passion for his beloved, who was younger than his 10 years. Friend Kerry, gallerist Michael Sadlier talked about Dolly so: "it is like a flower, but she was hot and attractive to an extreme degree".
Unfortunately, the girl was not only beautiful, but frivolous. She is constantly forced to suffer Kerry, who changed his attitude from blind adoration to hatred. John was annoyed that Dolly young and Flirty that it draws the attention of men that she'll allow myself the joke of his feelings. One of the few written portraits of the girls, Kerry called a "Witch" and that says a lot.
The tragic denouement in their relationship came in 1914. Heard a rumor that Dolly posed for the risque photos, John went to his passion for explanations, taking with him a revolver. After a brief showdown, the artist double-shot the girl, killing her on the spot.
Seeing what you've done, Kerry shot himself in the heart, but not dead. When the noise came a police constable, he was found bloodied but alive in John's near lifeless body of his beloved. On the question of what happened, he replied simply — "I love this girl".
Kerry's wound proved fatal and he died a day later in one of the London clinics. The artist was only 30 years old. In the papers of John after his death was found a letter in which were these lines: "This mad passion wasted my strength and broke my will". The artist understood that his feelings are not constructive, and destroy his talent, and sooner or later lead to death.
