By Pictolic https://pictolic.com/article/curly-frillback-pigeons-decorative-birds-with-naturally-curly-feathers.htmlFrillback pigeons are so unusual that it is hard to believe in their existence. The feathers of these pigeons are curling, as if a diligent bird stylist has worked on them. But these beauties owe their appearance not to the masters and not even to nature, but to the painstaking long-term work of breeders. Unfortunately, history has not preserved the names of the people who gave this beauty to the world.
Scientists believe that Frillback pigeons are one of the oldest breeds bred by man. Absolutely nothing is known about its origin — neither the era, nor the name of the breeders, nor even the name of the region where it was bred. Many are inclined to believe that curly pigeons appeared in the Near East, but there is also an opinion that they began to be bred in the south of Europe.
In Europe, the first curly pigeons were seen in the 17th century. For many centuries, the breed standard did not exist — it was introduced only in 1909. This breed is classified as structural, since its main distinguishing feature is the pigeon's changed plumage. The curls should be corkscrew-like, as if starched, evenly distributed, without gaps.
The feathers on the paws should certainly be smooth, and the paws themselves should be short. Describes the standard and color of the frillbacks. Monochrome pigeons are highly valued — white, black or gray. The purity of the color in this case is very important. Any color inclusions and even a green tint in black individuals are considered marriage. The second color is allowed only if it is clearly limited and bright.
Inexperienced in pigeons, people often compare these domestic pigeons with their Asian counterparts. There are several species of birds in Asia, the feathers of which also curl a little. But geneticists have already ruled out a close relationship with these birds. They are sure that frillbacks owe their appearance only to people.
The secret of curly feathers is hidden in two partially dominant morphological modifier genes – "Cu1" and "Cu2". There are also experts who believe that a third gene is also needed to create curls. It's amazing that in the 21st century we know so little about the birds that have been living side by side with us for many centuries.
Looking at the intricate curls on the wings of frillback pigeons, it's hard to believe that they can rise into the air. But strangely enough, these birds fly wonderfully. True, the pigeon coops who dealt with them claim that thoroughbred beauties still try to walk - slowly and impressively.
Frillbacks are very unusual birds, but not the strangest among pigeons. Don't you believe it? Then you definitely need to get acquainted with the Budapest short-beaked, which are sometimes called "pugs".
