Boiling Shanai-Timpishka River: The Deadly Wonder of the Amazon

Many have heard of boiling lakes fed by hot springs. But a river with boiling water is more like a myth or a plot from Dante's works. But such a river really exists - it is called Shanai-Timpishka and is located in the Amazon rainforest. It was discovered quite recently, and now scientists are studying this amazing and dangerous natural phenomenon.

Deep in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon lies a unique natural phenomenon: the Shanay-Timpishka River, better known as the "Boiling River." Its waters reach temperatures of up to 100 °C, which can cause severe burns on contact. This place is shrouded in both scientific mysteries and local legends.

The Shanay-Timpisca River flows through the Mayantuyacu region of Peru. The Shanay-Timpisca is a tributary of the Pachitea River, which in turn flows into the Ucayali, one of the main sources of the Amazon. The river extends for about 4 miles (6.4 km), reaching a width of up to 82 feet (25 meters) and a depth of about 20 feet (6 meters) in some places.

The river has deep spiritual significance for locals. Shamans believe that the boiling water is generated by Yakumama, a giant snake spirit known as the "Mother of Waters." The name "Shanai-Timpishka" translates as "boiled by the heat of the sun," although the source of heat is actually geothermal. The river flows through a remote and little-explored area covered in dense tropical forests. For this reason, it was only discovered in 2011.

The boiling river was discovered by Andres Ruzo, a geothermal water researcher, ecologist and traveler. The scientist has seen many wonders, as he has traveled all over the world. But he admits that the Shanai-Timpishka River is the most impressive phenomenon he has encountered.

Ruzo did not stumble upon the boiling river by chance. Local residents have often told him legends about a stream in which meat can be cooked. The researcher admits that he allowed for the existence of a river with warm water. There are many geothermal springs in Peru, and such a phenomenon is quite possible.

But the stories about the boiling river seemed to him a great exaggeration. It is normal for a lake, but to maintain such a temperature in a stream of water over a significant distance, a colossal amount of geothermal energy is needed. Moreover, in the legends, the Indians placed the river in the Amazon River Valley, where volcanic activity is practically absent.

Setting out on his search, Andres Ruzo was prepared for the most severe disappointment. But he found a real miracle, which has no analogues on the planet yet. In 2011, the scientist found Shanai-Timpishka, carried out all the necessary measurements and analyses and put the river on the map. In 2017, he returned to the Amazon jungle to shoot a documentary.

The researcher says that the water in the river is so hot that if you lean over it, you feel the temperature as if it were a boiling kettle. Ruzo has seen birds and reptiles accidentally fall into the river and die immediately. In some places, animal bones are visible in the water, including some fairly large ones. Despite the extreme conditions, the river is home to some microorganisms that are adapted to high temperatures, which is of interest to scientists studying extremophiles.

Andres Ruzo has conducted studies of the river and found that its high temperature is maintained despite the absence of nearby active volcanoes or geothermal sources that would normally heat groundwater. The prevailing theory is that rainwater penetrates deep into the earth's crust through deep faults, where it is heated, and then returns to the surface through hot springs, heating the river along its course.

Andres Ruzo's expedition traveled along the Shanai-Timpishki stream and found the source of the river. Boiling water bursts out of deep cracks in the rocks made of porous rocks. The scientist and his colleagues from the University of Miami believe that their discovery is very important for humanity. The boiling river shows how nature can change where the air temperature is higher.

In 2022, US scientist Riley Fortier studied more than 70 different locations along the Shanai-Timpishka River. He found that the higher the water temperature, the less diverse the vegetation in the area.

The conclusion is disappointing. If global warming on the planet continues, the biosphere will lose plant species. What was seen in the Amazon rainforest shows that evolution will not help and we will simply watch as the flora gradually dies, and then the fauna.

The Shanai-Timpishka River is a unique natural phenomenon that not only amazes the imagination, but also gives scientists an idea of the possible consequences of climate change.
