Silence is gold? What happens if you don't make a sound for a whole year
There are many sayings that it is better to be silent than to speak. Of course, we are talking about the need to think well before expressing any thought. But what will happen to the person who takes this advice literally? Would it be useful to be silent for a whole year and not utter a single sound during this time?
If you are completely silent for a whole year, it will have a number of physical and psychological consequences. First of all, it is worth mentioning the decrease in the tone of the vocal muscles. This will distort the voice and make some sounds difficult to pronounce. Hearing will also suffer, since our speech is one of the most important sources of sound perception.
In a year, the volume of the lungs will decrease and their elasticity will decrease. The consequences will be the most serious - there will be a decrease in respiratory function and the overall physical endurance of the body will noticeably suffer. Simply put, a person's health and performance will worsen.
Psychological consequences are no less serious problem. Due to prolonged silence, self-esteem and self-confidence will deteriorate. This will happen due to lack of communication and because of the feeling of isolation from the outside world. Social phobia will also develop and anxiety will increase. This is due to the fear of communication and the feeling of discomfort in the company of people capable of communication.
Memory and cognitive abilities deteriorate. It is no secret that our speech is the most important tool for remembering information and developing thinking. We can say that absolute silence makes a person more vulnerable psychologically and affects his mental abilities. Lack of communication is one of the reasons why people who have been living on uninhabited islands for a long time “run wild”.
If a person does not utter a sound for a long time, then this may be the result of serious mental problems. Obviously, silence is not typical for us, if the lack of speech is not congenital and is not associated with serious injuries. Therefore, if a person is silent for a long time, he needs medical help.
Usually, an examination is performed to determine the cause of the problem, and then treatment is prescribed. Modern medicine uses speech therapy, physiotherapy, exercise therapy, psychological assistance, and even medications to treat such conditions.
